Jubilee pageant!
it is with great pleasure that we can now announce that Barnabas has been selected to represent Cornwall at Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee pageant taking place on the Thames on the 3rd June. I will be writing to you all soon, as well as publishing here on the website, all the details.
The outline plan is to leave on the 20th May, and position Barnabas at Faversham which is on the Swale near the Thames estaury. We will make passage to the Royal Docks in London on the 1st June. Following pageant on the 3rd there is a a 2 day party planned at the Royal Docks on the 4th and 5th June. We still start the passage home on the 6th which we expect to take 5 days depending on the weather.
Please let us know when you are available to crew on the the passages, or legs to London and back.
Brest and Douarnanez July 2012
Barnabas will be attending the Temps Fête sur Douarnenez from 19th to 22nd July 2012.
In the Wake of Brest 2012, the Rosmeur harbour will welcome the great « armada ». Catalonia is the guest of honour, with its sailors, boats and musicians from Barcelona to Perpignan. Cornwall, Galicia, the Netherlands will also be there together of course with french provinces from Normandy to the Basque Country.
The organisation is drawing up a programme of nautical activities to take place in the bay : regattas, parades, outing courses, etc.
In the spring, we will receive the ship’s log of Temps Fête sur Douarnenez 2012, containing all the informations about our stay in Douarnenez (mooring space, side plan, nautical activities detailed programme etc…).
Link to BBC report on the pageant:
Founded in 1994, the Trust has four historic working vessels, which have been restored to sailing condition: the Barnabas, a lug rigged mackerel driver based in Mousehole when not on 'tour', Soft Wing, a gaff rigged oyster dredger based in Falmouth, Ellen, a sprit rigged Gorran Haven crabber and Sea Urchin, a small replica of the Ellen are also based in Mousehole.
Between them they demonstrate the most important rigs used in the 19th century Cornish fishing industry, each with specific advantages for the type of fishing it was designed for. Our members actively sail the boats as well as supporting the preservation of our maritime heritage through educational projects and social activities.
Membership, £25 per annum, is open to all to come and enjoy sailing these beautiful craft to many events that celebrate Cornwall's maritime tradition such as the Mousehole Sea, Salt & Sail Festival, Fowey Classics Regatta, Falmouth Week and many more. Look under the 'Sailing Program' for the years events and use the 'Sailing Calendar' to crew or Skipper a planned trip. Members are encouraged to sail the boats, whether for an afternoon cruise along the Fal with your family or a few days sailing to the Scillies and back in the Barnabas. All members are welcome to make suggestions and organise trips. See 'Suggest a Sail' under the 'Sailing Program'.
Alternatively, if you are planning a holiday in Cornwall and would like to 'book' one of the boats for the exclusive use of you, your family or friends for a few days, then use the 'Book a Boat' facility. There is a suggested donation to the Trust for this service.
We are a charity and membership subscriptions and donations are used to maintain the fleet, 3 of which are around 120 years old, in ship shape sailing condition. This work being undertaken by volunteers from the membership. The rest of the funds raised are used to promote our Cornish maritime heritage through educational events, especially with schools, and attendance at exhibitions and classic sailing festivals.
